Criteria for effective TMs
To get the best results from a translation memory, the quality and consistency of your texts are of the utmost importance. For accurate translations, source texts should be clearly structured and free from ambiguities. Additionally, your texts need to be in an editable format which can be handled by a CAT tool.

How does translation memory work
When your text needs to be translated, a Computer Aided Translation (CAT) tool will divide the text into smaller segments, which are then compared to the contents of the TM. If a segment has been translated before, the previous translation appears as a suggestion to the translator, which in turn increases the speed with which they can move through your text.
Sentences that have not been translated as part of a previous translation project, so there are no suggestions for them from the TM.

Sentences that are identical to sentences from previous translations in the TM.
Example:
I am learning to sing a song. This is fun.
Sentences that appear several times within a translation project and are only translated once.
Example:
I am learning something about translation memory. This is fun.
I am taking notes. This is fun.
Sentences that are similar to sentences in the TM. The degree to which they match the sentences in the TM is indicated by the percent in the match rate.
